Jonathan Matas is a 25 year old visual artist born and raised in Seattle, WA and currently based in New York. An unabashed socialist, he works in and out of the borders of political agitation, ‘fine art’ and design. Jonathan has a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada. Along with his own practice, Jonathan is a teaching artist who has mentored youth from preschool to high school.
Recent projects include mentoring with the Native Youth Artists Collective in Vancouver, an installation at the Puffin Room in SOHO, NY and murals for NY’s famous Two Boots Pizza. In November, Jonathan ventured into new terrain, collaborating with performance artist Skeena Reece on a show at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. He is currently an artist-in-residence at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, working on an installation about the crisis of capitalism.
